Yeah, I am going to pithily quote John F. Kennedy by stating “Ich bin ein Berliner.” In case your command of German is rather expandable, let me put my superb translation skills to work. In a nutshell, “Ich bin ein Berliner” means that I am a Berlin born and raised hipster-prick whose formidable pride for his hometown is deeply rooted in his DNA.
This being said, I might be the worst Berlin tour guide for this very reason. I can’t exactly pinpoint why. I assume people tend to take their hometown for granted, so much so that they become oblivious to its distinctiveness. Nahh, I am exaggerating again…
Still, if people asked me to recommend places to stay I used to be baffled. Why the heck would I know where tourists like to stay? So, for obvious reasons, you understand why my repertoire of hotel experiences in Berlin might be limited. However, I am glad this has changed.
If you’ve read my previous post you’ll know that I’ve recently turned 30. Not a big deal but big enough to make me come to Berlin for the weekend to spend quality time with my family and friends. And upon arrival, my significant other surprised me with an unforgettable stay at Hotel Palace Berlin.
Location over Stars
We all love fancy places, don’t we? But when it comes to choosing a hotel, I tend to sacrifice luxury for location. After all, what good is a five star hotel in the middle of nowhere that forces you to take endless drives around the city you wish to explore? Ultimately, I’d rather stay at a two star hotel in a vibrant city center than a five star hotel in a wasteland.
Luckily, with Hotel Palace Berlin we didn’t have to sacrifice the one for the other. Whilst being a five star hotel, it is situated at Berlin’s most exclusive, fascinating, and popular areas of the capital. Here, you’ll find chic bars and coffee shops, unique restaurants as well as numerous fashion stores (make sure to stop by the concept mall Bikini & KaDeWE).
The hotel is also a great starting point for sightseeing. There are various attractions nearby that let you immerse in the long history and culture of my beloved capital. One of my favourite places is the Berlin Zoo. Apart from the variety of local and exotic animals to be observed, it’s such a nice place to simply relax and go for a walk.
Speaking of the zoo, we stayed for two nights at the Zoo Suite. And I don’t even know where to begin. Let’s start by saying that I’ve actually seen quite a few five star hotels from the inside. Not so often I’ve occupied a suite though. Unsurprisingly, I was a little overwhelmed when entering this spacious, elegant and exclusively furnished suite.
It hardly left anything to be desired. The living and sleeping areas were visually separated. It featured an ensuite bathroom with whirlpool bath and a shower. Even the windows were soundproofed, so we heard no city noise at all. Everything was a blend of clean and modern lines with traditional elements to them.
Well, they’ve got it right. Their staff was very attentive and they made sure we enjoyed ourselves. A lovely and easy check-in, rose petals on the bed, chilled champagne, home-made chocolates, a clean room, attentive waiters and helpful concierges. If you care to know, Hotel Palace Berlin actually has been awarded the “Leaders Club Guest Recognition Award of Excellence” in 2012 and 2013 for best customer service. From where I stand I’d say: well-deserved.
So…if you are planning to come visit my lovely hood and want to make it a special stay, make sure to consider this lovely hotel. It will be worthwhile.
